A journey shaped by contrasts, silence, and movement, the Rota das Emoções connects three of Brazil’s most extraordinary natural wonders through an immersive and carefully curated route. From sweeping dunes and crystal lagoons to wind-sculpted coastlines and remote villages, every stretch of the journey reveals a new rhythm, a new atmosphere, and a deeper sense of connection with nature.

The Rota das Emoções spans Maranhão, Piauí, and Ceará — and its cuisine reflects a fascinating inland-meets-coast tradition. Grilled lobster and crab fresh from the cold-upwelling Maranhão coast appear alongside hearty Northeastern dishes like arroz de cuxá and caruru. In Jericoacoara, a sophisticated dining scene has emerged, with barefoot meals on the sand giving way to intimate candlelit tables under the stars. Merola arranges private dinners prepared by local matriarchs in fishing villages — experiences that have no equivalent anywhere in the world.
This is one of Brazil’s most culturally distinct regions. Bumba Meu Boi — Maranhão’s spectacular folkloric festival, recognised by UNESCO — is a theatrical and ceremonial tradition unlike anything else in the country. São Luís preserves a remarkable collection of Portuguese azulejo-tiled colonial architecture that has earned UNESCO World Heritage designation. The indigenous heritage of the Piauí highlands, visible in the extraordinary rock art of the Serra da Capivara, adds an archaeological dimension of global significance. Merola curates access to cultural centres and communities rarely reached by international travellers.
The defining landscape of the Rota das Emoções is the Lençóis Maranhenses — an extraordinary national park of white dunes and seasonal turquoise lagoons that appears to defy geography. Private 4×4 expeditions with specialist naturalist guides reach the most remote lagoons at sunrise, before the day visitors arrive. The Delta do Parnaíba — one of only three ocean deltas in the world — is navigated by private motorboat through a maze of channels, islands, and pristine beaches. Jericoacoara’s consistent winds make it one of the world’s premier kitesurfing and windsurfing destinations, with private coaching available through Merola.
A private 4×4 crossing of the Lençóis Maranhenses to a remote lagoon, with a hammock lunch and a specialist naturalist guide. A sunset arrival in Jericoacoara, watching the sun dip into the ocean from the famous dune — then dinner in a private courtyard garden. A private boat expedition through the Delta do Parnaíba, ending at a remote river lodge visible only from the water. This route is one of Brazil’s last great frontiers of luxury adventure travel.
The Lençóis Maranhenses is at its most spectacular between July and September, when rainfall has filled the interdunal lagoons to their maximum depth and colour. Jericoacoara is ideal from July to January, when consistent winds favour kite sports and skies are reliably clear. The Rota das Emoções is best experienced as a multi-day overland journey — beginning in São Luís, passing through Barreirinhas and the Lençóis, crossing the Delta do Parnaíba, and ending in Jericoacoara.
